Hey Max, I don't know how much feedback you get, but I saw your name as the artist for an amazing painting you did of a pair of black cats that ran in the New York Times. I love your work, especially the birds and animals set against the peeling painted walls. Not to mention you're kind of adorable too. When you work on the birch panels do you sand them and then gesso them? I had a plan to paint on wood and was wondering if you could offer up any tips? Thanks.
Pardon me, it's been six months since you wrote me. I just got this message, I've been completely embroiled in a new project and I've neglected this blog utterly. Thank you very much for the compliments. To answer your question I don't normally sand birch as I find the panels I get are typically already very smooth. I usually just give them one, or sometimes two coats of gesso and go from there. That results in a slightly textured surface that I prefer. Let me know if I can help in any other way!
